I came across this photograph last week when I was beginning my preparations for April Squares, and it evoked a whole host of memories. The main one being what my thoughts were I first observed this Ancona in a country garden in Somerset. I can still recall how I smiled and immediately thought of the childhood game and nursery rhyme. Although now on reflection I realise she was probably saying she was the Queen of the Castle before she dismissed us, the dirty rascals!

So the theme isn’t chooks in castles or bottoms. I’m thinking maybe it’s feathers or height. This girl seems to be surveying all before her.

I’m guessing the theme for April will be Chickens in Castles, everyone must have 31 different photos of those.

I remember a couple of decades ago a bird photography forum having a bottom theme for a while. It allowed me to showcase my collection of birds having a poop.

My favourite, which I seem to have misplaced, was a Turkey Vulture flying over a car park at a well-known bird photography location during spring migration. It was carpet bombing the birders and their vehicles.

A great, perky photo on yet another dismally grey day.

oh it is so grey isn’t it. Are you having any water problems near you?

We’re lucky enough not to be in a flood zone. But the fields! Many of them have water birds on them.
