I travelled back in time with Mum when I first shared this roof square in 2018, and so it is rather appropriate, when Mum is staying with us again this week, that I once more share this unusual roof at Fort Nelson to celebrate four years of Past Squares.

If you have not yet joined us this month, there’s still plenty of time and there is something for everyone. You could;
- Re-post a previous post which at the time didn’t get the attention it deserved or maybe it is one of your favourites
- Share a photograph that would have been perfect for one or more of the previous themes; Flowers, Sky, Circles & Squares, Roofs, In the Pink, Time, Spiky, Blue, Lines, words containing the word ‘light’, Top, Perspectives, Kinda, Up, Bright and Trees.
- Or if you have not been squaring for very long why not pick a theme you missed and share multiple squares of that theme
- Alternatively have fun with the word ‘past’ by sharing squares of history and heritage, and that includes past holidays, objects past their prime and your favourite pastimes!
The tag is PastSquares but the only thing you really need to remember is that in October your images must be square – that’s four equal sides!
Fort have grassy roofs? I’m glad to know this!

There are a whole series of them along this part of the coast, all designed to be hidden from a distance hence the grassy roofs!

That looks like an incredible poppy installation/sculpture. Is that what it is?

It is indeed, it was part of the WW1 remembrance events in 2018 – here are a few more pics https://beckybofwinchester.com/2018/07/01/wave-at-fort-nelson/

There’s a poppy installation at the War Memorial in Melbourne. I took photos when we were there two years ago, but never shared them because I thought the photos weren’t ‘good enough’. I may revisit them and (perhaps) reconsider that assumption.

I like The Wave quite a bit and the location for it is great. Like the roof too. Here’s mine today with a non-square photo in it too, but right at the bottom: https://grahamsisland.com/2021/10/19/small-spotted-eagle-ray/

That’s a spectacular image, the red flowers. That’s on a grass roof? Beautiful!

The flowers were an addition as part of an exhibit a few years ago – more here https://beckybofwinchester.com/2018/07/01/wave-at-fort-nelson/

I’m still not quite sure what I was looking at – open to interpretation (next to the factual description of what it is).
I’ve got another former flower so that it will be the last in this series among the past squares: https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/2021/10/19/dandelion-past-their-prime/

I know the angle I took it at is a tad confusing – here’s more on the roof https://beckybofwinchester.com/2018/06/30/june-square-30/

I like the shot with the flower wave best! Or maybe it’s flower smoke?

It’s a wave of poppies, remembering WW1

Funny story? When my boys were in the British Boy Scouts (in Saudi) we had a parade for Armistice Day. My sister (not versed in British culture) was very appreciative and a bit puzzled about the custom: “I hadn’t thought they would honour gay people like that!” (poppy fail)
