I travelled back in time with Mum when I first shared this roof square in 2018, and so it is rather appropriate, when Mum is staying with us again this week, that I once more share this unusual roof at Fort Nelson to celebrate four years of Past Squares.

If you have not yet joined us this month, there’s still plenty of time and there is something for everyone. You could;
- Re-post a previous post which at the time didn’t get the attention it deserved or maybe it is one of your favourites
- Share a photograph that would have been perfect for one or more of the previous themes; Flowers, Sky, Circles & Squares, Roofs, In the Pink, Time, Spiky, Blue, Lines, words containing the word ‘light’, Top, Perspectives, Kinda, Up, Bright and Trees.
- Or if you have not been squaring for very long why not pick a theme you missed and share multiple squares of that theme
- Alternatively have fun with the word ‘past’ by sharing squares of history and heritage, and that includes past holidays, objects past their prime and your favourite pastimes!
The tag is PastSquares but the only thing you really need to remember is that in October your images must be square – that’s four equal sides!
Clever and beautiful, and nicely green

Your marvellous grass roofs made me think of roofless, as in Wenlock Priory:

A not particularly popular Bright Square although a personal favourite:

So clever, from a distance you’d never know there were forts there.
They were less clever on the guns though, most of them face inland!

This is an unusual roof. I like the wave of flowers 🙂

The waves were amazing, well worth visiting the permanent ones in London

The sky is all clear over here, much like what I just shared for today’s post 🙂

I am most envious – still dark here and it looks like it is raining. Hoping will clear by this afternoon

I know it’s not the original reason for the grass roof, but I love seeing living roofs; great insulation as well 👏 Here’s mine: https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/10/19/skwurrel-pastsquares-oct-19/

Is the grass roof a way of blending in to the surroundings? Or the effects of old age?

The former, as the idea was this fort and the others would be hidden from sight of the French if they invaded.
