I probably should have shared these thoughts right at the start of the challenge, but learning from previous Square months there is always at least one fabulous person who joins us in the final week, so hopefully these thoughts will still be useful!
When I was preparing my Squares this month, MrB and I had a discussion about what is a tree. Wikipedia states that ‘In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species.’ Whereas Collins says ‘any large woody perennial plant with a distinct trunk giving rise to branches and leaves at some distance from the ground’. Which raises the question in my mind at least, when does a young tree become a tree?!
If you are one of those fabulous persons who have yet to square a tree you have until Saturday to create your square post with the tag #TreeSquare, and don’t forget to include a pingback to any of my daily square posts in July. The only absolute rule though for joining in with Squares is that your photograph must be square in shape!
A second Scottish square for July. An overlooked photo from my archives that I now wonder why it was ignored for so long:

Beautiful mini tree, Becky π Looks like a marsh orchid; we have similar ones up here, but they tend to have a lot more purple in them π Here’s my latest: https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/07/28/autumnal-yellow-cffc-and-treesquare/

The question being when is a woody perennial a shrub or when is it a tree?

So THAT’s why you were asking me ‘When is a tree not a tree?’ the other day. I still don’t know, but all the trees in my post today are very sure they’re trees, I think: https://margaret21.com/2021/07/28/a-history-of-a-holiday-in-fifteen-trees-thirteen/

I am sure yours are all trees. Be there very soon. Currently 48hrs behind squares after two crazy work days. Thoroughly enjoying though catching up with comments this evening, and hopefully in half hour or so with all the squares

Interesting isn’t it. I did wonder about mine a couple of times. Is holly a tree? Well, it often gets called a tree and it seems that it depends on how you present it not on its “being” – present it as a tree or as a bush.
Anyway, today I have the tiniest bits of big trees and, more importantly, I’m presenting them as a square: https://wp.me/p35cNK-qxg

as always you have honed in on the most important point – is it square!

Yes it depends on your perspective as to what a tree is or isn’t Becky. I like the fact that to an ant your plant is a tree!
I have shared some trees from my walk yesterday – when the sun came to visit! https://debs-world.com/2021/07/28/where-i-walk-wordlesswednesday/

I’ve always though that, from perspective of an ant, a blade of grass might be a tree π

And you got me thinking about my post for today. I did some research and a cycad is a gymnosperm tree. Phew. (don’t ask me what that means) π
