It is time to announce the theme for July Squares. I really hope you are going to like it as I think it offers something for everyone; whether you want to tell a story, be artistic, challenge yourself technically or simply share a square that caught your eye. First though I want to share a little bit about where the idea came from.

Our perceptions are affected by our past experiences, education, values, culture, and preconceived notions. Just think of the post I wrote a few days ago on white privilege.
Current circumstances also affect our perceptions. Covid-19 has certainly changed my perspective. It has also bizarrely affected time. If you have been and/or still are in lock-down, have you noticed how some mornings seem to go on for ever and ever, and then suddenly it is the early evening? And is it really only 12 weeks since the official lockdown?

All this pondering has left one word in my mind – perspective. Guess not surprising as photography after all is all about perspective. Just google perspective photography and you will find hundreds if not thousands of posts on it. Perspective is also a word with multiple meanings, which makes it perfect for squares;
- Art – the method by which solid objects drawn or painted on a flat surface are given the appearance of depth and distance.
- Geometry – the way that objects appear smaller when they are further away and the way parallel lines appear to meet each other at a point in the distance.
- Point of View – a particular way of considering (looking at) something or the capacity to view things in their relative importance
- Vista – seeing something over distance or time

Today, through my multiple morning squares, I have attempted to explore the different meanings within one photo shoot. It has also been a great excuse to play with the block editor! I hope you have as much fun planning your July Squares.
For more inspiration and other perspectives I recommend visiting Jude’s 2020 Photo Challenge for a better understanding of depth of field and use of space, Cee’s CCYL post for some great geometry and Debbie for perspective this time last year.

Squares starts Wednesday 1st July. I will be sharing a Square Perspective daily and I’d love it if you did the same. You can though join us weekly or even just pop in occasionally with your squares. The frequency of your posts depends on you and your blog. The only absolute rule is that your main photograph must be square in shape.
If you have not participated before I recommend reading my Square Essentials page but before you go why not take a moment to enjoy 13 seconds of my morning perspective.
oh my is it the 4th already? Guess it must be!
