Today’s post for Jude’s texture challenge isn’t as perfect as her Zimbabwean sculptures, but I hope you might like my twist on the textures of smooth and rough.

Hanbury Hall in Spitalfields dates back to 1719. Originally a small Huguenot chapel, it is now part of Christ Church and still the heart of the local community. Charles Dickens regularly used the building for public readings of his works, and the Match Girls met here to prepare their strikes in 1888. All which suggests, to me at least, that this building has seen plenty of difficult things as well as pleasant. A great example of taking the rough with the smooth, especially since on the outside I discovered smooth and rough bricks, and also some rather lovely smooth tiles.

    1. Thanks 🙂 the tiles caught my eyes first and then I realised as I was photographing they were surrounded by rough and smooth. Jude must have been in my head!

    1. You’d love Spitalfields, Anabel. There is just so much history in this small area, and also a vibrant vegan/vegetarian community. Definitely worth spending a day around here 🙂 another post will follow in a week or so with more info

      2. We saw the outside but didn’t go in as not in our plans. However definitely going back and looks fascinating – from what I can work out it is open two days a week. Once the current crisis has passed we will visit.

  8. Nicely done Becky, I love to learn the history of a building. Things are certainly a little rough at the moment and I’m wondering if going to Surrey over. Easter is wise.

    1. Hopefully Easter will be fine, but you are right to ponder. I’ve just been cancelling meetings, thinking better to avoid people for next two weeks and then see where we are then.

      1. Yeh, well I’m going to my daughter so I can play it by ear. As you say, see what happens. I’m more worried for my son than myself as he has a very compromised immune system. Luckily he works from home.
