So funny calling the Swamphen a chicken. I loved the comments. Not my favourite bird as Swamphens pulled out around 80% of the 1200 water plants we put in a wetland years ago. Love the photo Becky 🙂
Not a bird I’ve seen (knowingly, at least) but I just popped over to your Portuguese sighting and it’s an impressive fellow. and great for a blue square.
I’ve gone catty rather than birdy, but I know you like both 🙂 https://travelwithintent.com/2019/07/12/house-of-four-cats/
Have a good weekend, Becky
A blue coot, is it? I’ve only ever seen the black variety with the white shield. But I’m no birder (but I know one). I’m sticking with flowers but since it’s almost the weekend my thought turn towards other pleasures: https://picturesimperfect2.wordpress.com/2019/07/12/another-busted-myth/

I’m glad Brian clarified the name – Swamphen – sorry to read they are pesky for the water plants!

They are an aggressive bird too. They even eat other birds eggs

You’ve convinced me, I don’t like them then. 😉

Hmmm not sure these European ones are as aggressive as the Australian ones. These ones mostly eat roots.

Again not sure the European ones are as problematic as the Australian ones.

oh my your Australian ones clearly a problem. These Western ones are much better, although they do get through a lot of roots!
The Blue Chicken is their French name, we call then Purple Swamphens 🙂

Just been to your original post. What a haunting call. Seems a shame to call it something as sludgy sounding as swamphen 🙂

What fun! Don’t expect there will be many of them at the Lido! Mine too are also on the water, but you would hardly guess!

Yay cats . . can’t wait be there in a moment.
Apparently they are now making their way to England occasionally, so you never know . . . https://www.rarebirdalert.co.uk/v2/Content/BOU_Western-Purple-Swamphen-added-to-the-British-List.aspx?s_id=2368923

It’s a Purple Swamphen sometimes called a Purple Coot as they are of the same family.
